Garage Door Sensor Blink Codes: LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie
June 8, 2026 · Heather Window & Door · Coppell garage door specialists
Your garage door opener is trying to tell you something. The LED is blinking a code, and depending on the brand and the count, it means something very specific. Here is the cheat sheet we use on every service call.
LiftMaster blink codes
| Blinks | Likely cause | DIY check |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Safety sensor wire shorted | Inspect wiring near staples |
| 2 | Sensor wire open / disconnected | Reconnect sensor wires |
| 3 | Door control wire shorted | Disconnect wall console, retest |
| 4 | Sensors misaligned | Re-aim until both LEDs are solid |
| 5 | RPM sensor / logic board | Pro service |
| 6 | Motor overheating / overload | Let cool 15 minutes |
| 9 | Motor will not run | Check breaker, pro service |
| 10 (or rapid) | Sensor obstruction or alignment | Wipe lenses, re-aim |
Chamberlain blink codes
| Blinks | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| 1 | Sensor wire short to ground |
| 2 | Sensor wire short to wall console |
| 3 | Wall console wire short |
| 4 | Sensors not aligned |
| 5 | RPM sensor failure |
| 6 | Motor overheating |
| 9 | Motor failure |
Chamberlain and LiftMaster share a parent company (Chamberlain Group), so the codes are nearly identical.
Genie blink codes
Genie uses solid color LEDs more than blink counts. Look at the side panel:
- Solid blue, no movement, opener has power, door at limit
- Slow red blink, safety beam broken
- Fast red blink, sensor obstruction or misalignment
- Yellow blink, battery backup (if equipped) is low
When DIY is fine
Sensor alignment and wiping lenses is genuinely a 5-minute homeowner fix. The LEDs on the back of each sensor should be two solid lights when the door is unobstructed.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean when my LiftMaster opener blinks 10 times?
10 blinks (or rapidly blinking) usually means the safety photo-eye sensors are misaligned, blocked, or have a wire issue. Wipe both lenses, verify both LEDs are solid (not blinking), and gently re-aim them at each other until both lights stay on.
Why does my Chamberlain opener LED blink twice?
2 blinks on Chamberlain usually indicates a sensor wire short or break. Inspect wiring between the sensors and the opener motor for staple cuts, pet damage, or moisture intrusion at the staple points.
What does 1 blink mean on Genie openers?
1 slow blink on Genie typically means the door is at the open limit or the safety beam is broken. Check the photo-eyes first, then verify the open-limit setting on the motor.
