A cable runs from each bottom corner up to a drum on the spring’s shaft. Both sides wind together, which keeps the door level.
A cable runs up each side of the door to a drum at the top. The cables carry the springs’ pull to the door, so they stay under tension too.

No. The spring carries the weight. The cables carry the door up to the drums at the top. A cable can come off on its own, and it can also be the first sign a spring is going.
What will it cost?

Can I put the cable back on?
Please don’t. The drum is under spring tension, and a cable put back wrong can let one side of the door drop.
Is the door safe to use right now?
If a spring snapped, it is off its track, or it won’t close, stop using the opener and call. If a car is stuck inside, say so on the call.
