Interior door installation across DFW, from our Coppell base. A door that binds may be the door, the hinges, the frame or the house.

Interior doors are hung to a frame that is itself hung to a house, and any of the three can move. A door that used to swing and now catches is the visible end of that.

We look at the hinges, the frame and the strike before touching the door itself, because fitting a slab to a frame that has racked only buys a season. The estimate says which of the two we are fixing.

A door that has started to bind, drag or miss its latch is door repair, and the estimate says whether it is the slab, the hinges or the frame.

Why an interior door stops shutting

Almost nothing inside a house is square, and a door is the thing that reports it.

An interior door swings on two or three hinges and latches into a strike plate in the jamb. Those two things have to agree with each other, and they only do while the frame stays where it was set. A house settles, a floor moves with the season, and the door that closed for years starts catching in one corner — often at a top corner.

The fixes follow the diagnosis. A hinge screw that has stripped its hole lets the whole leaf sag; the Foundation Performance Association names longer screws as the remedy. A latch that now misses the strike is often a door out of plumb or a strike out of line, both on that guide’s list of probable causes.

Replacing the door is a different decision, and it is usually about what the door is rather than how it shuts: a hollow-core slab swapped for a solid one because of noise, a bifold that has never run well replaced with something hinged, or a set of doors changed because the house is being finished to one style. Whether a prehung unit or a slab suits depends on whether the frame that is there is worth keeping.

What it looks like

The door catches at one corner, and only at one corner.
The latch hits the strike plate instead of entering it.
A hinge leaf standing proud, or a screw head no longer seated.
A gap that is wide at the top and tight at the bottom, or the reverse.

Size Width, height and thickness at the edge.
Swing Which side the hinges are on, and whether it opens into the room or the hall. Masonite calls it right-hand when the handle is on your right with your back to the hinges.
Slab or prehung A slab is only the door; a prehung unit comes hung in its own frame. Masonite lists 4 9/16, 5 1/4 and 6 9/16 inches as common jamb depths.

Hollow or solid core Say if you know; solid-core doors weigh more.
What it does Where it rubs, whether it binds only in some months, catches the latch or floor, or swings by itself.

Why it happens

Why interior doors stick in North Texas

Any of three can move: the door, the frame, the ground.

Clay soil Texas A&M AgriLife Extension says some Texas clay swells when wet and shrinks when dry; the City of Frisco cites clay soil in North Texas. Whether yours moves is an engineer's call.
Wood The USDA Forest Products Laboratory says wood exchanges moisture with the air by season and changes size as it does; paint slows this but does not prevent it.

The frame Foundation engineers list sticking doors among signs of possible movement, and the probability rises with the number of signs. One sticking door is one sign.
Hardware The Foundation Performance Association, writing for Houston-area homes, lists doors that swing alone, will not latch or bind at the bottom as often wrongly blamed on the foundation. Probable causes: loose hinges, a door out of plumb, a misaligned strike.

Which rules apply is your city’s building department’s call, not a door company’s.

The model code The International Code Council's model residential code, R302.5.1, bars a garage opening straight into a room used for sleeping. Other openings need a solid wood or solid or honeycomb-core steel door at least 1 3/8 inches thick, or a 20-minute fire-rated door, with a self-closing or automatic-closing device. The 2021 and 2024 editions add self-latching.

Your city Coppell has adopted the 2024 edition with local amendments. Ask your building department which edition and amendments apply.

Two things we don’t do, so you’re not left waiting on us: broken or fogged glass and insulated-glass units, and solar screens. On a new unit we attach, adjust and test the latch the manufacturer supplied; separate lock work is outside what we do.

What does interior door work cover?

What will it cost?

It depends on whether the work is the slab, the frame or the trim, and on how many doors. Whatever it turns out to be, the price is on the written estimate before anything starts, and the invoice matches the number you approved.

Can I send a photo instead?

Yes. Text a photo of the shut door showing the gap along the top and latch side, plus the hinge edge. A technician still measures at the visit, so a rough description of the problem is enough.

Who should look at wall cracks?

If cracks in brick or sheetrock make you suspect the foundation, the City of Richardson says a structural or foundation engineer may be needed.

Are solid-core doors harder on hinges?

They can be. Masonite says solid-core doors weigh more, and the Foundation Performance Association lists screws too small or short for a door’s weight as a cause of binding.

Why does my door swing by itself?

The Foundation Performance Association calls it a ghost door and gives a door out of plumb as the probable cause, fixed by slightly bending a hinge pin or adding shims.

Can a hollow-core door go into the garage?

Check first. The model code names solid wood, steel and 20-minute fire-rated doors for that opening, and a hollow-core wood slab is not on that list. Ask your city before you buy; its answer governs.

Can you fit a lock or a privacy latch?

On a complete factory unit we attach, adjust and test the latch that came with it. Separate lock, latch and security-hardware work is outside what we do.

My door won’t latch any more.

The door may have dropped on its hinges, or the frame or the house may have moved, so it no longer meets the strike. We say which before we start.

Do you charge to come out?

No. We look first and give you a written estimate. You approve it before any work starts, and there is no charge if you decline.

What does the warranty cover?

Five years on parts and labor, every repair and every install. The scope is on the estimate you approve and on the invoice.
