Standard garage door sizes
“Standard” means a size manufacturers commonly build, not a size guaranteed to fit your opening. Both halves of that sentence matter.

Standard garage door sizes: the short answer
Clopay publishes 8 ft by 7 ft and 9 ft by 7 ft as the two most common single sizes, and 16 ft by 7 ft as the classic double. The opening is only the first of five measurements — side room, headroom, backroom, the framing and whatever is in the way all decide what will actually go in.
The common residential sizes

Clopay’s own buying guide names the two most common single-car sizes as 8 ft wide by 7 ft high and 9 ft wide by 7 ft high, and the classic double as 16 ft wide by 7 ft high. Heights of 8 ft are widely available. Clopay says doors taller or wider than those are less common and often special order.
Treat those as planning figures. What your opening takes is a measurement, not a category.
Measure more than width and height
- The opening Width and height, measured at more than one point. Openings settle out of square.
- Side room The space beside the opening on each side, for the vertical track.
- Headroom Between the top of the opening and the ceiling, for the curve and the spring shaft.
- Backroom How far back into the garage the horizontal track needs to run.
- What is in the way Pipework, lighting, a water heater, a sloped ceiling, storage above the opening.
The floor’s level and the condition of the jambs and header matter too, and they are easy to overlook until a new door will not seal at one corner.

Why a nominal size is not the whole specification
Two doors with identical nominal dimensions can differ in section heights, track configuration, counterbalance type, wind reinforcement, window layout, insulation and what the opener needs to be.
That is why “I need a 16 by 7” is the beginning of the conversation rather than the end of it. Size does not fix weight either: how much a garage door weighs depends on material, layers, insulation and glass.
A safer way to plan
- Photograph the opening from inside and from outside
- Measure the opening at more than one point, and note the smallest figure
- Note the ceiling slope and the lowest obstruction
- Photograph the existing track, spring shaft and opener
- Write down the clearances above and either side
- Confirm the exact product specification before anything is ordered
And do not remove springs or cables to take a measurement. Nothing about this job requires it.
