How Much Does a Garage Door Weigh? (Sizing Guide for Texas Homes)
June 9, 2026 · Heather Window & Door · Coppell garage door installers
Garage door weight matters more than most homeowners realize. The number drives:
- Spring sizing (most important, wrong-spec springs are the #1 cause of premature failures we see)
- Opener horsepower (undersized opener works too hard, dies young)
- Track and bracket gauge (heavier doors need heavier track)
- Whether you can DIY-anything (you really cannot DIY a 200-pound door)
Here is what doors actually weigh in 2026 DFW market builds.
Standard single-car doors
| Door type | 8x7 | 9x7 | 10x7 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Non-insulated steel | 85-110 lb | 95-125 lb | 110-140 lb |
| Insulated steel (R-9 to R-12) | 110-135 lb | 130-150 lb | 145-175 lb |
| Insulated steel (R-16+) | 130-160 lb | 150-180 lb | 170-200 lb |
| Aluminum & glass | 145-185 lb | 165-210 lb | 185-235 lb |
| Composite wood-look | 175-215 lb | 195-240 lb | 220-270 lb |
Standard double-car doors
| Door type | 16x7 | 18x7 |
|---|---|---|
| Non-insulated steel | 145-185 lb | 170-215 lb |
| Insulated steel (R-9 to R-12) | 175-225 lb | 205-260 lb |
| Insulated steel (R-16+) | 215-270 lb | 250-315 lb |
| Aluminum & glass | 245-315 lb | 285-365 lb |
| Composite wood-look | 295-375 lb | 345-435 lb |
Why the spring sizing matters so much
Garage door springs are sized by inch-pounds per turn (IPPT), the torque needed to lift the door’s exact weight cleanly. Wrong-spec springs:
- Too small → wear out fast, often in 3-5 years instead of 10-15
- Too small → opener strains constantly, motor dies early
- Too big → door floats when released, opener cannot close it reliably
- Too big → bouncing on close, sensor false-trips
Most “the spring broke after 4 years” stories we hear are wrong-spec springs installed by the cheapest bidder. A correctly sized high-cycle spring matched to the actual door weight runs 14-18 years.
How to weigh your own door (safely)
If your door is operational and you have a bathroom scale:
- Disconnect the opener (pull the red release)
- Open the door fully
- Place the scale under the bottom panel, centered
- Slowly lower the door onto the scale and read the weight
For a more accurate measurement, do this with the door at three different heights and average. Or just have us measure when we come out for a quote, we do this on every install.
What opener fits what door
| Door weight | Recommended HP |
|---|---|
| Up to 160 lb | 1/2 HP AC chain or belt |
| 160-250 lb | 1/2 HP DC belt or 3/4 HP AC |
| 250-350 lb | 3/4 HP DC belt |
| 350+ lb | 1 HP DC belt or wall-mount direct |
DC motors run more smoothly and quietly than AC at the same horsepower rating, DC is the right pick whenever it’s available.
When weight matters most
- Spring replacement, getting the spec right doubles the life
- New door install, opener must match
- Door upgrade (uninsulated → insulated), usually +30-60 lb; opener and springs both need re-sizing
- Material change (steel → composite), can double the weight; full hardware re-spec needed

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a typical residential garage door weigh?
A standard 9x7 single-car insulated steel door weighs 130-150 pounds. A 16x7 double-car insulated steel door weighs 175-225 pounds. Carriage house and wood-look composite doors are heavier (225-325+ pounds for a double).
Why does garage door weight matter?
Springs are sized to the exact door weight. A spring that is too small for the door wears out years early, most premature spring failures we see are wrong-spec springs installed by the cheapest bidder. A correctly-sized spring matched to the door weight runs balanced and lasts much longer.
Can my existing opener handle a heavier door?
Usually yes for a 1/2 HP opener moving up one size. For wood-look composite or oversized doors, you may need a 3/4 HP or 1 HP DC opener. We check during the install quote.
